OUTSIDE STORY ON COLTON CHOSEN A TOP TEN

.
The story I wrote about Colton Harris-Moore in Outside Magazine (the first major magazine story published on Colt) was just selected as one of the"Top Ten Most Ridiculously Entertaining Reads of 2010."

Longform.org is a group that combs the web for stories that are larger than the little bits and blurbs that most people have the patience to peruse online. They then highlight the ones that they feel are worthy of a real read.

Longform has chosen some amazing stories for their editor's picks and top tens, so it's great to make their list. If anyone hasn't read the piece, the link above will take you to the list and then to the story on Outside's website.

  3. Your article in Outside just sucked me right in and I wanted to learn everything I could about this kid. That's what a good story does! Congratulations, Bob. I'm sure there will be many, many more awards in your future.

  4. Bob why is Colton so quiet through out all of this? He really hasn't talked much about his 'Crime spree' and i don't know about anyone else but, Its kinda driving me crazy because, I really do want to hear his side of the story in his own words and just sorta see what he's about. Its a shame too cause you hear about how he's very intelligent, and i want to see that for myself. So Bob do you think that maybe someday we will hear Colton have his say?

  5. Colton hasn't been sentenced yet, so it doesn't do him much good to talk about his crime spree right now. But yes, I think eventually we'll hear his side of the story -- hopefully after he's had time to figure out the real impetus for some of his actions.

  6. I think the poster who wants to hear more from the JD is going to be disappointed.
Why do you think this person is so intelligent? He's a dropout of about the 8th grade and has spent a good part of his life in reform school, robbing other people and on the run.
I don't think he'll have much to say that is coherent.

  7. @ Anonymous 6:58. At the risk of encouraging you, if you had read Bob's story (or some of the other well-written, balanced and fair pieces about Colton), you would know that this kid actually *is* really bright. He taught himself to fly using books and the internet. He is motivated and intelligent DESPITE having had a disfunctional, abusive, neglectful childhood. He was basically left to his own devices and had to become very resourceful from a young age.

Many of us can see that what Colt needs is some support and kindness and help channeling his energy in the right direction.

  8. Kate: True that. Bob: hope the writing's going well and eagerly awaiting a copy once it's in stores. Loved the Outside article and appreciated the reportage from Bahamas etc. Cheers from Oregon.
